It seems as if we get our coats off each morning, take a couple of breaths and we are loading our backpacks back up and saying goodbye! Yikes!
Just a reminder that Science Expo is due on Monday! Family homework (musical instruments) are due on February 25th.
LA: We had a busy morning. We enjoyed burning some energy in gym first thing this morning and then coming back and working on our proofreading skills. We're doing a fantastic job at easily recognizing appositives these days...it's wonderful! We also found out that many of us still need to be studying and practicing our RIT words nightly. We played a game today and there were a lot of unanswered questions because we weren't all prepared to answer the questions. We also worked on contractions during grammar and using our clues from the text to come up with an inference about the story.
HW: Weekly homework is due Friday. There will also be a RIT quiz over the past 10 words on Friday.
Math: We learned about probability using a spinner today. We had a lot of fun doing some experiments with different types of spinners and collecting data as a class.
HW: Math box and study link 7.11 are due tomorrow. The Unit 7 test will be given on Tuesday.
Social Studies: (Woods) We finished up reading all the sections in chapter 8 today. Our crop duster tour took us to Illinois and Minnesota. We had a really great time pretending we were businesspeople who were trying to make a new mall design.
HW: Mall designs need to be finished by Friday. A look ahead...the chapter 8 test will be given next Friday.

Happy 100th Day of School
I can't even begin to believe we have been together for 100 school days already this year. Where does the time go? I would like to thank everyone for their patience with me and my blogging (or non-blogging) that has been happening. I think everyone in my family is finally on the mend, so we should be back to our normal routine starting today! Whew!
Don't forget that Science Expo projects are due Monday, January 31st! NO EXCEPTIONS!
LA: Yesterday, our new story began, "The Power of Oil," a non-fiction article. It is a persuasive article that helps persuade people to use less oil. Our vocabulary words are: electrical, globe, fuels, and decayed. Our comprehension focuses on fact and opinion and persuasion. We listened to the story today as well as working with some special forms of the verbs be and have. In addition to working with our basal series, we also took some time to complete a 100th day of school writing prompt. It was a lot of fun doing so much brainstorming.
Our RIT words this week are the same as last-please continue to review.
HW: Weekly homework is due on Friday. 100th day of school writing is due tomorrow and there will be a RIT quiz on Friday, covering the words from 2 weeks ago and these 5 that we've had last week and this week.
Math: We took a time out from the journals and study links today to combine physical exercise, 100th day of school, equivalent fractions, probability and problem solving! It was lot of fun to explore just how many things we can do in sets of 100 second intervals.
HW: Finish the 100th day of school activity sheet.
Social Studies: (Grannan) We enjoyed our crop duster tour of South Dakota and Michigan today. We especially had a lot of fun getting off the plane and creating a "new car" in the Henry Ford style. We also learned what it might be like to work in an assembly line...some of us found out that maybe we need to work on our patience a bit. :)
HW: Finish part B of the question sheet--due Thursday.
Have you read about the family homework on email yet? This should have come across last week from Mrs. Stephan's email address. How are the instruments coming along? Don't forget that all instruments are due no later than February 25th! I can't wait to see them!

We also read our story, The Blind Hunter along with the CD. With the story this week, we will be learning about word families, using a glossary and using the text clues to draw conclusions about our reading. In Grammar, we are continuing to talk about pronouns...focusing today on subject and object pronouns.

Style-How the author uses words, phrases, and sentences for his or her ideas.
Suspense-A tension created as the reader becomes involved in a story and when the author leaves the reader in doubt as to what is coming next.
Quote-Text or speech that was written by someone else that you would like display in your own writing.
HW: Spelling test on Friday. Tomorrow is the RIT word quiz.

HW: Finish journal pages 342-343 (remember, you need to come up with 5 equivalent fractions for each given one!) math box and study link 7.7 are all due tomorrow.
Social Studies: (Woods) We've started a crop duster tour of the Midwest today! We spent our class today working with partners answering the geography challenge questions! We're looking forward to the rest of the tour!

It's Good To Be Back!
I always hate when I have to miss a day, and yesterday was especially hard missing the Wax Museum in Language Arts. The sub left an AWESOME note about the STAR behavior displayed by all groups, so I've very proud of each and everyone of you! Way to go!
LA: We had a busy morning. We spent almost an hour this morning practicing for ISTEP writing prompts. The prompt we used took us through every step of what we anticipate being on the test here in several weeks. It was good to go over the directions and start to remind our brains what that should look like. We also reviewed some figurative language terms with a practice sheet, specifically concentrating on imagery. We also talked about Haiku poetry again. On the flip side of that sheet, we were able to practice using multiple meaning words and finding the correct definitions for the context of the word. Lastly, we enjoyed time with our reading buddies and continuing our work in Vocabulary Vine.
HW: We will have our basal assessments in the morning. Book orders are due on Tuesday.
Math: We had a great time exploring probability with a deck of cards today in math. We talked about the "chance of something happening" and the exact probability of it.
HW: Math box and study link 7.3, in addition to the extra sheet are all due tomorrow.
Social Studies: (Woods) We spent the entire day in groups working on our reading notes today. We were using specific maps of the southeast to answer questions and learn about the region.
HW: Chapter 7 test will be given next Wednesday.

I think we're officially back into the swing of things...it seemed more like routine today and we weren't quite as sleepy as yesterday!
LA: We had a busy morning, as usual! We continued our work on Snowflake Bently, working on main ideas and details. We also completed a worksheet on summarizing information that we have read and highlighting where we found the answers in the passage. We finished our morning with vocabulary vine.
HW: Don't forget the wax museum is taking place tomorrow morning! Be prepared!
Math: Fraction Fun today! We jumped into unit 7, which has us reviewing and learning more about fractions. Today we had fun reviewing the parts of a fraction, how they are written, and how to draw and color in parts of a whole.
HW: Math box and study link 7.1 are due tomorrow.
Social Studies: (Grannan) We started chapter 7 today, which is continuing to teach us about the southeast region of the United States. We talked about the elevation of the region and also the rivers and ocean found there as well.
HW: A look ahead...this is a short chapter, the unit 7 test will be given next Thursday!

Happy New Year!
It was so exciting to hear about everyone's holiday breaks today! It sounds like everyone had a lot of fun and rest!
LA: We jumped back into the basal today, with our story, Snowflake Bently. It was a lot of fun to learn all about the different kinds of snowflakes and how they are photographed. I'm guessing we'll be able to test the theory before to long, according to the weather reports! : / We also worked on our grammar skill, of irregular verbs today and of course reviewed our vocabulary words for the week.
HW: We have no weekly homework this week due to the Wax Museum. Don't forget that biography projects are due tomorrow and the Wax Museum will be held on Wednesday morning.
Math: We took our mid-year exam today. I'm excited to take a look at them tonight to see where we go from here!
HW: None
Social Studies: (Woods) We started chapter 7 today, which has us working with the southeast and different kinds of maps related to elevation and geographic terms.
HW: None--A look ahead, due to the short chapter, our homeroom kids will be testing next Wednesday.
