Monday, December 12

Whew!  We're in the home stretch!  It's very important that the students stay as focused as possible in these last two weeks.  If you have an early exit planned, and won't be here through the 23rd, please let me know as soon as possible so we can make plans.

There is a lot going on in the next couple of weeks!  Here's a quick snapshot of what our days look like:

Wednesday, 12/14: Art Smart
Friday, 12/16: Reading Projects Due (Woods), Giving Tree donations due, Science Expo proposals due
Wednesday, 12/21: Mini Mall
Friday, 12/23: Giving Celebration, Winter Breaks begins

Interesting Fact of the Day: The most used letter in the English alphabet is "e" and the "q" is the least used.

LA: We jumped back into the basal today since we finished Maniac Magee last week.  This week, our historical fiction piece is called, Sleds on Boston Common. It was a lot of fun to tie our literature piece into what we are learning about in Social Studies currently.  Our vocabulary words for the week are: navigation, instruct, swagger, patriots, tyrant, stark, governor and spunk.  In grammar we are learning about action verbs.  During our skill practice, we will be reviewing how to draw conclusions based off of text clues, working with alliteration and meter in poetry and also building word families.

HW: Weekly homework packet is due Friday.  The vocabulary sentences are due tomorrow.  Reading projects are due on Friday...be prepared to present if your stick is pulled.

Math: We are just about to the end of unit 6.  Today, we talked about clock fractions, and how to use a clock to help us figure out an easy way to add and subtract fractions.  Some of us prefer the good ol' fashioned way, and that's okay too!  Just another resource to add to our collection.

HW: Finish journal pages 195-197.  Math boxes and study link 6.9 are also due tomorrow.  The unit 6 test will be given on Thursday of this week.

Social Studies: (Grannan) We started in chapter 7 today.  During this chapter, we are learning about the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies. We'll be making billboards trying to attract new settlers into specific areas.

Interesting Fact of the Day: The longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds.

HW:  Study Vocab and study for test.

Math~
Today we reviewed how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers.  Don't forget you need to have a common denominator.  Also don't forget that you don't add or subtract the denominator.

Social Studies: (Woods) We finished up chapter 6 today by reading the Reading Further section and taking notes in our Interactive Student Notebooks.  We also worked on making an advertisement for our favorite colony.

Interesting Fact of the Day: Starfish don't have brains.

LA: Due to Mr. Glassman's visit today, we didn't have time to read the rest of our Maniac Magee book.  The suspense continues!  We'll be sure to finish it up tomorrow, though.  The final test will be given on Thursday, over the entire book.

HW: There will be a quiz over chapters 40-46 tomorrow.  The final test is on Thursday.

Math: We spent the day with partners, working on filling out frequency tables, bar graphs, circle graphs and tally charts.  It was a lot of fun to review the many ways to collect and display data.

Monday, December 5

Interesting Fact of the Day: The opposite sides of a dice cube always add up to seven.

LA: We are nearly finished with our novel, Maniac Magee.  I know that many of us are fighting the growing urge to read ahead and find out the ending.  Keep fighting!  Let's finish it together!  :)  Today, we talked about stereotypes, assumptions, conflicts, comparing and contrasting, characterizations, , drawing conclusions and making inferences.  We are also taking a time out from a new grammar skill this week to review plurals and possessives.

HW: Vocabulary quiz tomorrow over this chunk's three words.  The comprehension questions and journal entry are also due tomorrow.  We will be having a quiz over chapters 33-39 tomorrow.  The final test over Maniac Magee will be given on Thursday.

Happy DARE Graduation Day

Thank you so much to all of the parents that took time out of their day to come join us at DARE Graduation this morning.  I'm so proud of all of our students!

Interesting Fact of the Day: North Dakota has never had an earthquake.

LA: We had a shortened day today due to graduation, but were still able to make it through our next chunk of Maniac Magee.  I'm continuously pleased with the discussions we're having about this book and the topics it covers. We're learning about tons of new figurative language terms, as well as reviewing many old ones.  We also continued learning about plural and possessive nouns and how to tell the difference between the two.

HW: Finish comprehension questions and journal entry from this chunk of chapters.  Don't forget about the spelling, grammar and vocabulary test that will be given tomorrow morning.

Math: We continued on learning about different ways of displaying data.  Today, we matched data with line graphs and had to explain our reasoning for pairing the two together.  This led to some great discussions.

HW: Math box and study link 6.4 are due tomorrow.

Social Studies: (Woods) We learned about Roanoke and Jamestown today and took notes in our Interactive Student Notebooks.

HW: The chapter 6 test will be given next Friday.
