LA: We continued to work on our novel study today. We spent today working on chapters 7-9, focusing on the skills of similes, view point, author's style, characterization, genre, irony, connotation, symbolism, point of view, imagery and main idea. We also continued with our grammar skill of possessive nouns.
HW: Journal entry and questions for chapters 7-9. Don't forget to study for your vocabulary test tomorrow.
Math: We learned about using percent circles to help us read and figure out circle graphs.

Monday's News...
Interesting Fact of the Day: There are more cars in Southern California than there are cows in India.
Don't forget that we are still collecting non perishable food items to STUFF-A-TRAILER with on Wednesday. Please, please, please consider donating some canned or boxed food.
LA: Today we began our new novel study. We will be spending the next several weeks reading and learning language arts skills by reading "Maniac Magee" by Jerry Spinelli. This book is the legend of a boy who completely changed a town by his actions. We will be using Rit words and higher level thinking skills as we read each day. Today, we focused on metaphors, foreshadowing, irony, imagery, external conflict, symbolism, cause and effect, hyperbole's, similes and main ideas. Everyday, the students will have comprehension questions, a journal entry and a vocab quiz. The first vocab quiz is tomorrow. We had a great discussion about some of the mature topics that will be brought up in this book. I'm really looking forward to sharing this with our class.
We will still be doing spelling and grammar everyday. There will still be a spelling test, grammar test, and weekly assessment on Friday
HW: Finish questions and journal entry. Study for vocab quiz.
Math: Our focus today was on turning fractions into percents using a calculator. We did a lot of practice with this skill.
HW:Math box and study link 5.8 are due tomorrow. The test over Unit 5 will be next Wednesday.
Social Studies: (Grannan) We dove into the 7 explorers other than Christopher Columbus today during Social Studies. While reading, we found things out such as their personal background, sponsors, times they explored, what they did for a living. It was a lot of fun to learn so much about these important men!

LA: This morning, we reviewed the different ways of making a noun plural during our grammar lesson. We read and discussed the story "Rattlers" in our reading books. We paid special attention to the main ideas and supporting details of each section and how that helps us to better understand the overall story. We learned that amphi and ambi means both in our vocab vine time. We also reviewed our RIT words.
HW: Keep working on the weekly homework, it's due Friday and read 20-30 minutes.
Math~
Today we began working with fractions and decimals. Fractions can become decimals in two different ways. The first way is to divide the numerator by the denominator. The second way is to use equivalent fractions. Try to make the equivalent fraction with a denominator of 10 or 100. Then it is easy to convert to a decimal.
HW: Journal page139, math box and study link 5.5
Social Studies: (Woods) We began chapter 5 today, where our focus is going to be on 8 specific explorers. As a class today, we read and learned about Christopher Columbus. We will begin studying the other explorers on Friday, as we work in groups.

Interesting Fact of the Day: Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable.
LA: Our story for the week is Rattlers. This is a nonfiction story about snakes. We had a lot of disgusted faces while listening to our story! :) Our comprehension skill is summarizing and looking for the main ideas. We will also be looking at how the author organized the story. Our vocabulary words are species, survive, alert, vibrates, surroundings, prey, predators, vibrates, and lunging. Our vocabulary skill is using restated context clues to figure out the words. Both our grammar and spelling skills focus on plural nouns.
Here are this week's RIT words.
Fiction: A literary form based on imagination rather than just fact. Most stories are fiction.
Parallelism: The use of repetitive structure to create rhythm in writing. (The more we do, the more we can do is one example.)
Synedoche: Where a specific part refers to the whole. I got a new set of wheels meaning I got a new car.

Archetype: A model character or a character that other characters are based on. Percy is based on the archetype of a hero in Greek myths.
Paradox: A statement that is true even though it seems to be saying opposite things. Soon you will be grown up enough to read fairy tales again.
Quip: A clever or witty remark or comment brought about by the situation. After a ball game: Bad losers make worse winners.
Theme: The fundamental idea or life lesson explored in a literary work. Trusting friends was one theme in Percy Jackson.
Antithesis: Using opposite ideas in the same thought or sentence in order to make a point. Everybody doesn't like something, but nobody doesn't like Sara Lee.

It's A Cold Thursday
Interesting Fact of the Day: The hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards!
LA: We finished up learning about all our skills for the week. We spent quite a bit of time on common and proper nouns, as well as making inferences. We also had a great visit with our first grade reading buddies.

Wednesday, Already!

LA: We continued on with our skills for the week. Today we spent some time discussing how to use text clues and what we already know to help us figure out what the author may be saying (making inferences.) We also continued learning about proper nouns and giving examples. Finally, we had Vocabulary Vine and took our Unit 1 reading test.
HW: Weekly homework packet is due on Friday--don't forget parent signatures.
Math: We continued working on fractions today, introducing mixed numbers and pattern blocks to help us visualize them.
HW: Finish journal pages 125-127 if not completed in class with your partner. Also, math box 5.2 and study link 5.2 are due tomorrow.
Social Studies: (Grannan) We finished up chapter 4 today by reading the summary and the reading further section. We had group discussions over some of the events that led the Europeans to explore the New World. We also took the Northeast Region quiz and worked in our Interactive Student Notebooks.

Welcome November!
I hope everyone had a relaxing Fall Break! Mine was busy, but productive!
Interesting Fact of the Day: There are more plastic flamingos in the United States than there are real ones.
LA: We started Unit 2 today. Our first story is titled, Shiloh. Many students said they have read this as a chapter book as well. In grammar we are working on common and proper nouns. Our practice skill this week is using inferences to find out information that is not spelled out for us directly in the text. We're also going to be continuing to review idioms and how photographs help us to better understand text. The vocabulary words for the week are: decency, slurp, injury, sympathy, delivering, mournful, shrieks and bulletin board.
Our RIT words for the week are:
Allusion-A reference to a very familiar person, place, thing or event.
Atmosphere-The mood prevailing a literary work particularly created by the setting; helps establish the expectations and attitude of the reader.
Dialect-The speech pattern of a region or class.
Falling Action-The part of the story or play that works out the decision arrived during the climax.
Monologue-Speech by one character to him/herself or the reader/audience.
HW: Weekly homework packet is due Friday. Please be sure to bring back your writer's workshop book that you wrote with Mrs. Helman.
Math: We jumped into unit 5 today, which focuses on fractions. We spent the day working together to figure out fractions of a set and reviewing how to reduce fractions to their simplest terms.
HW: Math box and study link 5.1, along with the extra sheet are all due tomorrow.
