Welcome Visitors!

Today was a great day at Northpoint! We all greatly enjoyed visiting with a couple of students from China that are here visiting! We discovered that in many ways we are alike, yet we are very different too. We were disappointed that we only had such a short time together.

LA: We started our novel study today, The Cricket In Times Square. Unfortunately, our books haven't come in yet so we are doing it whole class for the time being, and keeping our fingers crossed that we get the call from Barnes and Noble soon. We worked on chapters 1 & 2 today, along with spending quite a bit of time on the comprehension questions. We are really working hard on writing in COMPLETE SENTENCES, and using the questions as part of our answers. Nothing less than personal best will be accepted in this area from here on. We also spent some time with vocabulary words, scrounging, anxiously, niche, plucked, rummaged and subway as well. We even squeezed in some time for our Unit 3 test as well.

HW: Finish vocabulary words (write word in marker, look up definition, write down part of speech and put the definition in your own words) and grammar sheet on contractions is due tomorrow. Friday's assessments were passed out today. Please watch for parent signature stickers on those tests that received an N.

Math: We can officially go bargain shopping! Today was all about finding a percent of a whole number. We completed lots of examples together and discovered how easy it is to find out how much something is if it is 20%, etc. off the original price.

HW: Journal pages 281-283 and study link 8.9 are due tomorrow.

Social Studies: We jumped into chapter 6 today. It was fun to reflect on how life might be if we moved to another country and had to attend school there. We tied that in to how the explorers and people coming to the New World must have felt. We also started to talk about the colonies of Jamestown, Roanoke and Plymouth.

HW: Finish the page in your Interactive Student Notebook.

Don't forget tomorrow is Science Night at Northpoint! This is sure to be a great time!

The Daddy/Daughter Dance that was scheduled for this Friday evening has been cancelled. Plan to join us at the Science Night hosted by the PTO on January 26! It's going to be a great evening of science experiments and fun!

Our vocabulary words for the week include brimming, gushed, landscape, scorching, parched, scrawny, gnarled, and progress. Our comprehension skill of the week is compare and contrast. Our focus is to see how Fatima's feelings about her grandmother change throughout the story.

Here are our RIT words:
Allusion - a reference to a famous person, place, thing, or idea.

Caricature - A distorted character resulting from the author's deliberate exaggeration of a trait or traits of personality.
Parody - A funny imitation of a serious piece of writing.
Denotation - The dictionary definition of a word.
