LA: Due to Science Expo presentations this morning, we had a short time to get a lot done! :) We took our spelling pretest and then moved on to grammar, where we are learning about subject and object pronouns. Many of us need to review regular pronouns before moving on...try to discuss tonight! The rest of the morning was spent on presentations, where we are all enjoying listening to one another's experiments and outcomes.
HW: Don't forget we will be going on our field trip on Friday morning. Letters went home to chaperones today.
Math: We're just about to finish up unit 8...taking some time to review positive and negative numbers today. Many of us don't even need to us to use the counters that we made anymore...hooray!
HW: Finish journal pages 237-239 if you and your partner did not finish. Don't forget to do #9 and 10 on 240...in addition to math boxes and study links 7.9
Social Studies: (Woods) We finished up reading chapter 8 today. We've had a great time learning about slaves and the difficulties they were faced with.
HW: Finish ISNB page 39 if you didn't complete it in class. Test over chapter 8 on Wednesday.

Interesting Fact of the Day: Illinois has the most personalized license plates of any state.
LA: We continued on with chapters 15-16 in our novel today. We also took some time to review the rules of a friendly letter. We finished off the morning by adding to our collection of Greek and Latin roots in Vocabulary Vine. Don't forget that MAP testing is tomorrow. Bring gum!
HW: Comprehension questions are due tomorrow, we will also have a vocabulary quiz over this chunk of chapters. Page 7 of the published book is due on Thursday. Permission slips for the art museum are due on Friday.
Math: We were able to squeeze two lessons into one day today...we completed 7.4 and 7.5 today, learning about parenthesis and order of operations.
HW: Journal pages 220, 223, math boxes and study links 7.4 and 7.5.
Social Studies: (Grannan) We continued on with chapter 8 today, learning about the slave trade from West Africa to the British Colonies.
HW: None

Whew! It's Been Awhile!
Yikes! I haven't blogged since December 13th...my apologies. I'm still trying to figure out how to put many more minutes into my days! Argh!
Interesting Fact of the Day: Velcro was invented by a Swiss guy who was inspired by the way burrs attached to clothing.
LA: We're in the middle of our novel, "My Side of the Mountain." The students are really enjoying this read and we're all learning lots of new information about how to survive in the wilderness. Today, we discussed things like protagonists, antagonists, similes, metaphors, repetition, and alliteration. We are also learning about pronouns and antecedents in Grammar.
HW: Finish comprehension questions for chapters 13-14, study for Wednesdays vocabulary test and bring book orders. Don't forget that page 5 for your published book is due tomorrow...with parent signatures.
Math: Today we learned about Scientific Notation. It was a lot of fun learning about the differences between the different kinds of notations that we use in math.
HW: Finish journal pages if they weren't completed with your partner. Math box and study link 7.3 are due tomorrow.

We had such an interesting discussion, I'm really looking forward to going through this chapter in the coming days.

Interesting Fact of the Day: A mosquito has 47 teeth
LA: We continued to move forward in our basal story. Today, we spent some time working on using text clues to figure out conclusions that the author lead us to. We also spent more time on our American Revolution Patriots that we did research on yesterday.
HW: Weekly homework packet is due Friday. Don't forget the reading projects are also due on Friday.
Math: We spent the entire day on the math practice test--so much so that we ran out of time to go over it fully. We will continue to go over it before the final test is given in class tomorrow.

Art Smart: Thanks to Mrs. King, and her helpers, Mrs. Schneider, Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Day for helping us create our Original Works of art today during our Art Smart time.

LA: We continued on with our story, Sleds on Boston Common today through centers. We had the opportunity to do research on a famous Patriot from the American Revolution, read the story with a partner and read an informational nonfiction piece from the American Revolution as well.
HW: Weekly homework packets are due Friday. Don't forget to bring in your reading project by Friday as well.
Math: Today was our last day in unit 6...another review of common denominators. We worked with partners on reviewing this important skill in order to be able to add and subtract fractions.
HW: Finish pages 200-202 if they weren't completed in class. Math box and study link 6.10 are also due tomorrow. Don't forget the Unit 6 test will be given on Thursday of this week.
Social Studies: (Woods) We began chapter 7 today, learning about the many colonies that Great Britian set up in the New World. We are dividing these colonies up and making billboards to advertise for new colonists to join.

Whew! We're in the home stretch! It's very important that the students stay as focused as possible in these last two weeks. If you have an early exit planned, and won't be here through the 23rd, please let me know as soon as possible so we can make plans.

LA: We jumped back into the basal today since we finished Maniac Magee last week. This week, our historical fiction piece is called, Sleds on Boston Common. It was a lot of fun to tie our literature piece into what we are learning about in Social Studies currently. Our vocabulary words for the week are: navigation, instruct, swagger, patriots, tyrant, stark, governor and spunk. In grammar we are learning about action verbs. During our skill practice, we will be reviewing how to draw conclusions based off of text clues, working with alliteration and meter in poetry and also building word families.
HW: Weekly homework packet is due Friday. The vocabulary sentences are due tomorrow. Reading projects are due on Friday...be prepared to present if your stick is pulled.
Math: We are just about to the end of unit 6. Today, we talked about clock fractions, and how to use a clock to help us figure out an easy way to add and subtract fractions. Some of us prefer the good ol' fashioned way, and that's okay too! Just another resource to add to our collection.
HW: Finish journal pages 195-197. Math boxes and study link 6.9 are also due tomorrow. The unit 6 test will be given on Thursday of this week.

LA: We finished up Maniac Magee today! Hooray! I made an assumption that most of us liked the book when the students broke out in applause after I read the last sentence. We also reviewed plural and possessive nouns.
HW: Study Vocab and study for test.

Today we reviewed how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. Don't forget you need to have a common denominator. Also don't forget that you don't add or subtract the denominator.
HW: Journal page 189, math boxes 6.7 & 6.8 and study link 6.8 are all due tomorrow.
