LA: What a crazy, quick day we had today. We spent time learning about 3 new word roots in Vocabulary Vine along with partner reading our stories, learning about writing in first person, and using dictionary entries to help us understand the meanings of words.
HW: Tomorrow is the big day! Reading projects and AR tests are due! We will also have assessments and turn in fluency and flow. Don't forget to bring back the bright yellow paper if you are in the Reading Buddies play.
Math: We put our thinking caps on this morning. Our task was to solve logic problems and we did well! It was great to stand in the front of the room and watch the light bulbs flicker on one by one as the students realized that with a little bit of critical thinking, confusing riddles were really easy to figure out one step at a time!
HW: Math box and study link 3.11. The unit 3 test will be on Tuesday.
Health: Today might have had some of us coming face to face with uncomfortable feelings. We spoke of feelings that make us antsy, or uncomfortable. Feelings like grief, boredom, shyness, anger and loneliness. We discussed why we might be feeling this way, ways to handle these feelings and what to do if we are experiencing them.
HW: The letter to me on one of these specific feelings is due to me tomorrow. Chapter 1 test will be given on Tuesday.

Our Week Is Half Over?!?!?!

LA: What a busy day we had today! The students that are in the Reading Buddies play are working very hard. Please see the bright yellow note that came home today if your child has a part in this play. The rest of the students are really enjoying their time they get to spend reading with their buddies. We also welcomed back Mrs. Slater into our room today for our next bullying session. The lessons she is presenting are so very important, and the discussions the students are having are amazing! We learned about commas in grammar today, and where to place them when we are making a list of items. We also had another writing marathon today where we chose between TV and Soccer. I can't wait to hear the writing!
HW: Fluency and Flow is due Friday. The book project due date is looming...we are under 2 days!
Math: Today we spent quite a bit of time practicing how to solve number sentences with variables.
HW: Journal pages 71-72, SL 3.10 and the extra sheet are all due tomorrow
Health: The 5th graders had DARE with Officer Redman today.

Too Much To Do Tuesday!
We always have way too much to do on Tuesdays!
LA: Today is our short day because of specials. We were able to squeeze in time for grammar-more plural nouns. Be sure to ask what the rules for making plurals are! We also started work on our final drafts of our poems. I've been amazed at the wonderful poetry writing that has been happening.
HW: Fluency and flow along with assessments will all be due and given on Friday. Also-book projects and AR tests are due on Friday.
Math: Today we had great discussions on the order of operations in math and how parenthesis always come first in number sentences. We spent quite a bit of time exploring ways to make correct number sentences by adding in parenthesis of our own.
HW: Journal page 68-69 and the extra sheet. Study link 3.9 is also due on Wednesday.
Health: Today we talked about stress and what that looks like for all of us. We also discussed the importance of knowing what to do if our bodies are stressed and how to take care of ourselves.

Another Monday Rolls Around!
What a busy day we had today! Box Tops Contest starts today! Be sure to send in all that you have at home before October 17th! They help us earn many great things for our school!
LA: Today was our usual Monday routine with a new spelling pre-test and new grammar and reading skills. This week we are focusing on spelling words that have consonant clusters. In grammar, we are working with singular and plural nouns, please try to incorporate these into discussions at home whenever you can! We also worked in our cursive handwriting books. It's amazing how beautiful our writing is when we sit flat in our chairs that are pushed in, books slanted and we take our time! In writing today, we started writing awesome poetry about our sketches from last Friday. They are doing an amazing job! We're really concentrating on word choice in our poems.

Math: Today we graded all of our math mania pages and reviewed those skills from the first 7 lessons in unit 3. The kids did an outstanding job on those pages. We also worked more with number sentences and began to talk about the order of operations in math.

Health: Today students worked on setting realistic goals and making mobiles with them. Many students forgot their hangers today! :(

Wahoo! The rain clouds rolled away and we were able to continue on with our No Child Left Inside activities. We had a great day! Here is how we spent it:

So sorry I'm so late in blogging today! I'm still in awe of how quickly our days go!
LA: Today was another short day due to double specials. We added 5 new cards to our Vocabulary Vine program and also spent some time on common and proper nouns. In addition, we also spent more time with context clues and how to use them!
HW: Fluency and Flow is due tomorrow. We will be taking assessments in between our No Child Left Inside Day activities. We are planning on eating lunch outside tomorrow. Please consider bringing a blanket or towel to sit on. It might also be a good idea to pack a lunch to save time!
Math: Today was our last day to work on Math Mania.
HW: Math Mania packets are due on Monday. We will not be having math tomorrow due to No Child Left Inside Day.
Health: Today we talked about setting goals and how important that process is. Students also read about being a good friend.
HW: Worksheet on context clues is due Monday. Students also need to bring in a hanger for an activity on Monday.

Welcome to October!
Fall is officially here. The weather is cool, the clouds are rolling in, the wind is a blowin...before you know it, the snow will be falling! Please remember to pack sweatshirts for recess!
LA: Today was our long LA day. We were able to work with our spelling skills (/ch/ and /tch/) and sort our spelling words for the week! We also spent time with our reading buddies. We LOVE our time together with those first grade friends! (For those students that are in the play, lines need to be memorized before our next meeting a week from today. We are also in need of parent helpers for costumes and scenery. If your child is in the play and you would like to help out, please let me know as soon as possible.) Another thing we did today was write persuasive letters. We're focusing on author's purpose this week, and so our letters today were written to me, trying to persuade me to choose their game for our class to play on Friday. I can't wait to be convinced!
HW: Fluency and Flow is due Friday. The unit 1 reading test needs to be scored and returned tomorrow!
Math: Students continued working on their Math Mania packets today. I was able to spend more time working with small groups of students reviewing skills from Unit 2.
HW: Math Mania packets are due on Monday
Health: Ms. Grannan's class had DARE with Officer Redman today, therefore, there was no Health Class.

A Few Reminders:
*Snack time should not be a buffet! Please send only one healthy snack with your child to enjoy!
*Afternoon Adventures papers and money are due back to school by Tuesday, October 7th.
*Just in case you missed the skating party tonight, there is another on tomorrow from 6:00-8:00. Be safe!
*Students all need a clean, plastic container for music tomorrow!
*Dress accordingly on Friday, it's No Child Left Inside Day and we have a lot of outdoor activities planned!
